Tom Ford Oud Wood from the Private Blend line is the gateway oud. It came out in 2007 when western noses still found Middle Eastern oud challenging, and Tom Ford deliberately stripped the barnyard and leather facets that make traditional oud polarizing. What you get is the aromatic, woody, slightly medicinal side of oud paired with cardamom, sandalwood, and a vanilla-amber base that makes it immediately approachable. The honest performance note: longevity sits at 4–6 hours on skin with moderate projection for the first couple of hours before settling intimate. That's the tradeoff for choosing the accessible oud. Xerjoff Torino21 is the wild card in this set and the one I expect to generate the most genuine reaction. Created in 2021 to celebrate the ATP Finals in Turin, it's built on a frozen mint accord that — unlike every other mint fragrance — actually survives into the dry down. The opening is cold, crisp, and herbal. There's a mojito-adjacent quality in the first hour that gives way to a cleaner herbal musk base. The house uses high-quality naturals throughout and it shows. For a fresh fragrance, 6–8 hours on skin is remarkable. The collector community verdict is consistent: polarizing on first spray, addictive after 30 minutes.

Why the decant format makes sense here: each of these three fragrances has a documented skin chemistry variable. Aventus responds differently depending on body heat — the same juice smells smokier on some people and fruitier on others. Oud Wood's projection runs softer on some skin types than others. Torino21's mint-forward opening needs 20–30 minutes before the full composition reveals itself. Three decants — available in 5ml, 10ml, or 20ml — let Dad actually wear all three before committing to even one full bottle. At $1,000+ across the set, that's the only way to approach it.

The oud accord is clean, aromatic, and dark without the challenging facets that make traditional oud difficult. Sandalwood keeps it creamy.
